Mendefera, the capital city of Seraye province, is a bustling market town. The town is dominated by two churches: the Orthodox San Girgio and the Catholic church school, situated on hills opposite from one another. Mendefera´s name derives from the high hill around which the town grew up. Meaning "No One Dare" it is a reference to the fierce resistence put up by the local people against Italian colonialism. The hill was never taken. Mendefera makes a convenient stop-off on your way to or from the south. |
